The Decision

Theatre has been in my heart for a long time. Ever since I donned the garb of the Cowardly Lion in second grade, I knew my life wouldn't be the same.

Through high school, theatre provided me with an outlet. Because of my blood disorder, I was not allowed to play sports...well, except for cross country and track, but let's face it, I don't run.

So I continued down the theatre path.

After seeing a show at Ashland's phenomenal Oregon Shakespeare Festival, I was inspired to pursue theatre as a career. I started looking into programs that would propel me to success. I was referred to Southern Oregon University (where I currently study) by a friend who was in their program. I knew the risk of a career acting, but I paid it no attention.

Since then (my sophomore year in high school), I was set to go to SOU.

But in the back of my mind, there was always something else telling me to do the smart thing. Well, over time, that voice took over more real estate in the property game that is my mind.

On one of my numerous visits to OHSU Doernbecher, the idea of becoming a hematologist occurred to me. I have a connection to the subject, making me more driven than maybe your average aspiring hematologist.

It wasn't until I actually went to SOU that I realized I didn't want to major in theatre anymore. I will always be a supporter and patron of theatre establishments like OSF, but it is something that would be risky, and I am not willing to risk it.

So the plan as of now (I haven't talked to an academic advisor yet):
1)Finish out my freshman year at SOU, fufilling General Education requirements
2)Transfer to OIT for their Pre-Med program
3) Maybe a different school to finish Pre-Med
4) Pursue pediatric hematology at Doernbecher
5) Be a doctor
6) ?????
7) Profit!

So, there it is. My life has just taken a turn, for better or worse. The people I have already told have been nothing but supportive, including my family. Let's hope things go according to plan.

  1. Damn, Col. That is mighty impressive. Mom had mentioned that you wanted to go to med school after you got your theatre degree. Now that is your main goal, eh?

I respect your ambition and I believe you can do it. One piece of advice I can offer you at this stage: always think about what you could or should be doing next. Ask everyone for advice. And listen to it thoughtfully. You're entering into a competitive arena and if you wait to take any necessary steps then you've already put yourself behind.

So talk to your professors. A lot. Let them know what your plans are. They'll go out of their way (especially at OIT) to advise you. Maybe even email the hematologist that you see and just mention that this is the path you've set for yourself and see if you can get any recommendations out of that.

I'm proud of you, Little Brother. I can't wait to see you again soon. If you try hard and don't give up on yourself, I'll never be disappointed in you.
